Ah, September. I love this month for so many reasons – college football, my birthday, end of summer days that represent a last opportunity to wear my caftans, chilly nights that require a favorite cardigan…and of course, September means wonderful new fashion in all the magazines and stores.
But here is a little secret: fall fashion doesn’t change year to year.
Every year, I wear the uniform below all season long – updating it with a few accessories and maybe a different lip color – if I remember to put on lipstick.
So in the spirit of back to school, let’s start with Fall Fashion #101: the basics
Fall Fashion #101: The Fall Cardigan
I live in cardigans like these from September to April. The Edison and the dolan cardigan are both cotton, perfect for throwing on over a sundress after the sun goes down. And the blanket cardigan I wear over my pj’s in the morning while drinking coffee (just being honest) and over jeans when running errands.
Fall Fashion #101: The Chambray Shirt
I have three chambray shirts of varying lengths and fabric weights. From the lightweight popover tunic (which I wear with shorts) to the soft bella dahl (tied over a dress or with jeans) to the longer selvedge chambray (over leggings later in the season), all three are in regular rotation. I also layer the chambray shirts under the cardigans above. Chambray is my go-to fabric for transition months and beyond.
Fall Fashion #101: Casual Black Pant
Before you spend another dollar on a pair of jeans, I suggest you put your effort into finding a decent pair of black pants.
Although the pants above are styled with heels, I am wearing my black pants with my white sneakers (below) and a grey sweatshirt. Casual elegance at it’s best…and you can delay buying denim for about a month. (Insider scoop: retailers are highly vested in denim this season and it will go on sale.)
Fall Fashion #101: The Fall Trench
I have no idea why mainstream retailers push the trench in the spring and pull back the trench in the fall. The variation in temperature and precipitation are similar in the spring and the fall which makes the trench a year round go-to. I bought a fall trench five years ago and have almost worn it out, so I was excited to see this denim version from GAP. I also love the extra long trench (notice her black pants and white kicks? see, I told you it is a thing…).
Fall Fashion #101: White Sneakers
Yes, white. Yes, after Labor Day. Fashion Week kicks off in NYC this week and your instagram is going to be flooded with editors wearing white sneakers. I am not bragging when I say I have worn them for years…style icons have worn them for decades!
Like most of fall fashion, white sneakers are not a new thing – they are just getting a new push. So go ahead and wear something comfortable. While my closet is pretty well stocked (i.e., I have one “good” pair and one “ok” pair), I am seriously considering the converse limited edition in all white.
So that’s my fall uniform. Of course, we will be talking coats, scarves, and boots soon. In the meantime, I owe several readers a workwear update! Today I found these great black pants for work that I think you should check out before they sell out!
Obviously, my fall fashion scouting is in full effect, so please let me know if there is anything you are looking for and I will help you track it down! Happy September!
