I always feel victorious when I quickly pull together an outfit and people compliment my look. I feel especially vindicated when I hear, “you look so stylish.”
Like every other woman, I stand in my closet and think, “I have nothing to wear. What in the world am I going to wear?”
But I have a trick. Instead of asking what do I want to wear, I ask who do I want to be today.
I pick an icon and dress like her. Simple.
From Audrey to Bardot to Carrie Bradshaw to a 90’s Ralph Lauren model, I pick an icon and build a look to emulate her.
For a recent cocktail party, I chose Audrey.
Navy dress, slick hair, and kitten heels. Easy.
I also used one of my favorite 5 rules of style – do something wrong – mixing rhinestones with modern silver accessories.
And the result?
This week I found two navy dresses that made me want to stock my whole closet with modern Audrey Hepburn looks.
While a black kitten heel may seem a little bland, the scallop in this J.Crew kitten heel reflects the drape of the peplum, which makes the outfit very Audrey.
Pulled together, thoughtful, simple, yet still interesting.
This cotton poplin dress is an easy basic to dress up or down. For a cocktail party, the cotton fabric and the sleek design are so modern that you can wear your shiniest baubles without risking you look like you are going to the prom.
These dresses would also be perfect for a fall wedding. I would just toss a cropped black cardigan over my shoulders and head to the party!
As always, if you are looking for something in particular, I am glad to help! I spend way too much time browsing in the stores and online…so we should put that time to good use!
