I decided to start james dry goods as homage to the general store – I love the simple idea of going to town to hear the latest, buy the necessities, and embrace the fellowship of community.
In the early 1900′s, my great-grandfather, whose middle name was James, ran a general store in Alvin, TX. In fact, his store counter is featured in the header of this site and a few of the interior shots are posted here and here.
james dry goods is the modern-day incarnation of the practicality and community of the a general store.
Here are a few things you should know about me:
Raised in Oklahoma, I moved to NYC in 2000 and am now living in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Hate is the only four-letter word I consciously try not to use.
I hate emoticons. And whiners.
I have been to 35 of the 50 United States…and I loved something about each of them.
I like people who create things, are problem solvers, and have a slightly cynical view of the world.
A good glass of wine is great, but I had an Old Man Coors a couple of weeks ago…and that was pretty great too!
james dry goods is a forum for us to share our obsessions, inspirations, and conversations. james dry goods is also home to the Made in America: contemporary project – highlighting designers who are creating fashion for all of us.

you are too kind! we are lucky to have you in our lives!
I was just telling my husband about dancing with Lorna Luft in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. I googled it to look for pictures, I found your post and cracked up. I’m sure you don’t remember me, I don’t really remember you either, but as we seem to have this incredibly bizarre piece of shared history, I thought it was important to say hi. Did you also dance in the number with Kelsey Grammar and me? What a ridiculous time… Anyway, thanks for the laugh.
HYSTERICAL! My husband always laughs when I tell him that is why we live here now! I wasn’t in the Kelsey Grammer number – my friend, Megan Dorr was in the Kelsey number…I was also in the back of the “cake” of the opening number – dancing with those weird hula hoop props – haha! I remember being not happy about doing the charleston – we were the best dancers in the country, right?!?! haha! I wish I had pictures of those terrible clown costumes. I don’t think they let us take purses or cameras to the performance, but I would love to see anything you have! I still watch every Thanksgiving and have been to the parade a few times…Thank you so much for reaching out and making me smile! Hope it’s ok to post this to my facebook – I just have to tell Megan about this!
