Spring Sandal Trend: Neutral Metallic Combo

see-by-chloe-metallic-sandals(All images clickable - shop away!)

For several years, See by Chloe has been my go-to shoe designer.  I buy one pair a season, wear them everyday and shamelessly, wear them again year after year.

I now have a pair of amazing riding boots (now three years old), a pair of oxblood/black colorblock booties, and a pair of black suede boots (bought last fall, worn rarely due to the terribly long winter).

Now it’s finally time to look for spring sandals, I revisited the brand (my spring pick shown at right) and noticed a very strong spring sandal trend: Neutral and Metallics.

I have never been a fan of shiny shoes and (after years working in the fashion industry) I know that I am in the minority…but this season, I love the natural leather against a shiny surface.  Here are my picks for the season…leaning towards the Marais USA take from Need Supply (below left)…but…

as I wrapped up my surfing, I found these amazingly neutral all metallic Ancient Greek Sandals (shown below).  So surfing for you took me 180 degrees – from “I don’t understand metallic shoes”…to “I think I love these triple tone metallic strappy sandals!”

I am a woman and I have the right to change my mind. I will let you know what I decide. In the meantime, I am going to stand in the middle of my closet and try to determine if my clothes really work with all metallic sandals!

Pop Says: Just Be Honest

Ed Note:  After a conversation with my sister today, I wanted to revisit this post.  And clarify that it is an on-going challenge.  But one that makes me happier each and every day I practice just being honest.

Earlier this year, I was talking to my parents about my New Year’s Resolution…ummm, list. The second resolution on my list was to worry less about what other people think about me.

Like most women, I spend waaaayyyy too much time worrying about what everyone thinks about me and not enough time focused on myself and taking care of the people who are closest to me.

me and pop circa 1975 image credit: P.O.P. back-up photog, Mom.

I was trying to explain this issue without getting all Oprah about it and my Pop said, “you know, the world would be a better place if everyone was just HONEST.”

He continued with examples, “No, I can’t meet you tonight, I have something else I must take care of…No, I don’t think you should be in that relationship…Yes, you look fat in those pants.”

My Pop, like most men, is very straightforward.

And, like most men, doesn’t understand why us women are all stumbling around looking for affirmation, when in reality, we should know we are pretty damn great.

And finally, he is mystified why we give a crap what anyone thinks, especially when we have already been accepted by an amazing group of family and friends.

He has a point. The caretaker/mothering instincts can’t and shouldn’t be killed – but being honest is definitely a part of protecting that.

Saying “no” or “I can’t” or “since you asked, (insert honest response here),” means that we feel strong enough to be honest with ourselves and with you. If our response offends you, think about why…just don’t judge us for being honest…oh wait…we don’t care…right? Oh brother…this is going to be hard!

I know this resolution is going to take some practice! But I know the payoff will be worth it. I know we would all be happier if we were just honest about what we want in life and honest about how we get it. I have been practicing this for all of 2012 and while some of the results haven’t been pretty…they have been, if nothing else, honest.

WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie Woven Totes

I am a grown woman, but when I shop I still hear my parents voices – “Do you like it? Will you wear it? Does it fit?”  Which equates to me now as “Is it cool? Is it practical? Is it functional?”

So, I was surprised last week when I saw a new tote from WANT Les Essentiels that was beaded.  The brand is well-known for practical, functional, and timeless designs usually crafted in canvas and leather – so a beaded tote?

I quickly ran through my shopping rules – Is it cool? Absolutely! Is it practical? Well…it is a tote with a zipper? Is it functional? Sigh…I would destroy the beautiful beading detail in one day.

As I was leaving the shop, I revisited the bag for an up-close look (it was beautiful after all)…when I realized the bag wasn’t beaded at all! It was woven cotton and plastic! SEE?

How cool! And practical! And functional!

Then I stumbled on to this navy and white version with the metallic leather handle and camel leather bottom…

As I have told you before, I have a serious bag problem and really want to add this one to the collection, but I have one more shopping rule:  If you have the strength to walk away from a purchase, but can’t get the item out of your head for a week, you might really need it!

I am on Day Four of the wait-a-week rule…I hope posting about the tote will help curb my obsession with this bag and maybe spark yours!  Consider yourself on Day One.

Spring Style: Upgrade Your Converse

classic converse sneakers

Nothing says spring like a new pair of crisp white kicks! I wear my favorite white canvas sneakers with everything!  I take my white sneakers very seriously.  I have been known to style my favorite white canvas sneakers with a cocktail dress and a ponytail to brunch…and it looks awesome, if I say so myself.

As a kid, I wore Keds.  As a teen, I wore Tretorns.  As a twenty-year old, like every other twenty-year old, I wore Converse.  And even though I still love my Converse, with all the great canvas shoes on the market, I think we should all branch out and try something new!  Here are my picks for the best canvas sneakers for spring!

I seriously considered revisiting Tretorns this season.  In my mind, Tretorns say tennis at the country club which sounds pretty fabulous…not that I play tennis or am a member of a country club.

superga canvas sneakersI finally settled on the white linen Superga sneakers.  Last year, The Row collaborated with Superga and produced upgraded kicks in linen and cashmere with gold tone hardware. I love the collab, but for my first run with a new sneaker, I know I need to start with the basics!

I also love all the Superga bright colors – maybe even enough to break my 20+ year run of white spring kicks!

Mad Men Season Six Style

I was dreading the Mad Men Season Six premier last weekend.  Based on press releases, I knew that Season Six would jump forward a few years to the late 1960′s.  When it comes to story building, the late 60′s are ripe – the Vietnam war, Woodstock, the sunset on the Summer of Love, the rise of underground politics – creating a tumultuous environment for the characters.

What I really dreaded was the fashion.  Costume designer, Janie Bryant, is amazing at her job, so I knew the fashion would be accurate…but I really dislike the fashion of that period.  So instead of just talking about the fashion of the episode, let’s talk about the style highlights from the show.

mad men don draper sunglasses season six

You know I love Don’s military issue Randolph Engineering Sunglasses from the past seasons. This season opened with Don on the beach in a pair of vintage Ray Ban Olympians. The Olympians are discontinued, but Old Focals filled the gap and has developed a limited edition reproduction of these amazing shades.

mad-men-style-zippo-lighter

Yes, Don has always used a Zippo lighter – again military issue. So, I wasn’t really surprised to see the lighter swap between Don and Private Dinkins. That said, I loved the quote on the back of the lighter:

In life we often have to do things that just are not our bag

Interesting right? An obvious quote for a solider, but what does that mean for Don? His continuous struggle to accept his current circumstances? Will he always be looking for greener grass in his business, his marriage, his identity, his life?  Maybe he will consider that sometimes you have to things you don’t want to do…then again, that might be boring. The struggle is the story.

I was excited to see Don return to the office and loved the scene when he opened the locked supply closet full of booze…and cameras! Canadian Club and Leica cameras?  Two of my favorite things!

mad-men-style-home-decor

I have to admit I was completely distracted during the New Year’s Eve scene…and not by the conversation or the tension…but by the amazing crystal hourglass cordials.  I have a minor obsession with vintage barware and I have been scouring the Internet trying to find these cordials!

Although I am sure the “fashion” of episode two will be cringingly accurate, I am crossing my fingers for even more inspirational style moments all season long!

Found: THE FIELD OUTFITTING COMPANY

The Husband is responsible for bringing in the mail – which he promptly drops in a pile on the dining room table.  Last night, as I was fighting back the urge to nag him about leaving the mail on the table, I flipped through the pile and noticed a really beautiful magazine at the bottom of the stack.  I fell in love with THE FIELD OUTFITTING COMPANY and have scanned a few pages for you!

THE FIELD is a new catalog/magazine hybrid with the best of apparel, gear, luggage, and footwear.  best new menswear catalog, the field outfitting company

The catalog features private label staples for every man’s wardrobe and selected items from the best menswear brands from around the world.

Don’t worry, the women haven’t been left out in the cold.  THE FIELD women’s selections focus on classic silhouettes in luxury fabrications, supplemented by Rebecca Minkoff footwear, handcrafted accessories from Colby June, and clutches from Cleobella.

The design is crisp, the articles are informative without sounding pretentious, and the captions are witty (reminding me of the J. Peterman catalogs of my childhood).  Check out this caption for the Newton Jacket shown on the cover:

“This is the is the kind of jacket that attracts more than a few glances at the airport.  It’s certainly the kind of thing you’d want to wear to the bar on a Friday night, all the while knowing how cool you look.  You probably won’t look as good as this guy, but let’s aim high, shall we?”

Ha!

The Gear & Goods section highlights great Assouline books and sophisticated travel accessories.

THE FIELD is supposed to launch today, but in the meantime, I suggest you call 1.866.277.3920 and get on the mailing list.  I don’t want to miss a single issue and I know you won’t either.

Agenda: Impressionism Fashion and Modernity Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

While researching the annual Met Costume Institute 2013 exhibit, Punk: Chaos to Couture, I stumbled on to a current exhibit, Impressionism Fashion and Modernity.

Wait. What? Is this the same exhibit that was shown at the Paris Musée d’Orsay in Fall of 2012? It is!

I am not an art or costume historian. That said, I have taken a few art history courses, can design and sew a dress, and have a maddening crush on Paris. As I was scheduling my visit to view the exhibit, I found a three session short course on the exhibit and immediately signed up!  The short course is also being held in April.

Although I realize that positive reviews sound distinctly not modern in our critical world, Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity exceeded my expectations.

First, this is a once in a lifetime experience. The work exhibited is on loan from over a dozen museums and the pieces are some of the top works in their respective museums. So, unless you are planning a month-long trip that encompasses the great museums of Europe and North America, here is your chance to see some of the great works of the Impressionist period in one location.

monet-luncheon-and-camille-1

I was especially excited to see Monet’s “Luncheon on the Grass” (shown above left) in the same exhibit as “Camille” (shown above right). Monet was working on Luncheon, when Courbet (featured as the sitting man) offered him a friendly critique, causing Monet to abandon the work and paint Camille in the green dress. He completed “Camille” in four days and entered it in the Salon of 1866.

Luncheon on the Grass” remained unfinished and was damaged. Monet removed the damaged areas of the work and the two surviving panels are included in the exhibit. The third panel is missing.

Second, I love the simplicity of the exhibit. While some may find the presentation a bit “old-school” (i.e., no loud soundtrack, hologram, or crushing fashionista crowds), the presentation of garments highlight and complement the paintings, driving the conversation of how these artists were moving away from realism and towards impressionism, capturing the light using broad brushstrokes and color variations. And the garments and accessories are almost all displayed in a 360 degree format, which is a logistical challenge for the curator and rarely happens during the Met’s Costume Institute annual shows.

Finally, for those patrons attending the exhibit to better understand the impressionist period and why fashion is so integral to those works, the presentation makes it abundantly clear how fashion allowed the artist to capture a moment and emphasize the complexities of light against the silhouettes and fabrics.

We know that these artists were experimenting with what the eye was truly seeing. How better to achieve that than to add a dramatic white day dress on a woman sitting in a garden of flowers, allowing to the artist to demonstrate, even amplify, the power of color manipulation made from the shadows created by the sun?

monet-women-in-garden

If they found the fashion/style/trend important enough to replicate it exactly, shouldn’t we evaluate and respect their work from that same perspective? Having examples of those costumes (which this exhibit has in spades) helps continue the learning and the conversations, which all good exhibits should strive to accomplish.

The dates for the exhibition in the United States are below.  I don’t have anything against the Costume Institute’s selection of Punk for this year’s exhibit…ok, maybe I do, but we can talk about that after I see it in May.  For now, I can say that this will be the best fashion exhibit of the year and you don’t want to miss it!
